"Some musicians find an extant niche and set up camp within its borders. Others, however, set out for the hinterlands and build a castle. The turrets of Austin's Josh Peters and Joshua Thomson, aka Atlas Maior, still stand on their latest EP, Hadal." - Austin Chronicle

Atlas Maior creates original music that combines elements of Progressive Jazz, Middle Eastern, Latin, and Indian music traditions. Band members Joshua Thomson (alto saxophone, flutes) and Josh Peters (oud, lavta), create a unique sound that balances intimate moments of sincerity with powerful melodies and incendiary rhythmic passages. The group writes original melodies exploring maqamat (Middle Eastern modal system) and harmonic progressions found in American jazz. Atlas Maior composes with a variety of rhythms & instrumentation including Indian tablas, kanjira, & Chinese hulusi.

As an ensemble Atlas Maior has released 6 studio albums, most recently new album "Hadal" (released 2/17/23), their follow up to "RIPTIDE", voted a 2019 Top 100 release by The Austin Chronicle. Guma, Atlas Maior, Found Memories

 — (CDT, UTC-05) — (CDT, UTC-05)

Captain Quack's Soundspace, 5326 Menchaca Rd , Austin, TX 78745

Get ready to experience some of Austin’s best musicians with performances by Guma, Atlas Maior, and Found Memories at Soundspace!

T.J. Masters (Guma) is a writer, musician, and community radio host based in Austin TX. Guma is the name of the group. Hot on the heels of 2022’s A List of Sightings, Guma returns with a pair of singles produced and recorded right here in Texas during a kind of “super session” with some of Austin’s best players. This time, the soundtrack is that specific brand of outlaw country to which Texas lays claim. Think Willie, Waylon, Jerry Jeff, and the rest, but filtered through Masters’s typically wry and sometimes dire train of thought. But it wouldn’t be Guma if it were just a straight genre exercise. The records make use of the tropes that have come to signify “classic” country — mournful pedal steel, blistering chicken pickin’ leads, warm acoustic strumming — and puts them into service telling stories about the perils of modern driving, raising a coterie of egg-laying hens, and persisting through a pandemic. “Driving the Highways of Texas” and “Highway 10 Blues” are streaming now. Small Cool World airs every Thursday on KOOP 91.7FM in Austin.

Atlas Maior creates original music that combines elements of Progressive Jazz, Middle Eastern, Latin American, and Indian music traditions. Band members Joshua Thomson (alto saxophone, flutes) & Josh Peters (oud, lavta) create a unique sound that balances intimate moments of sincerity with powerful melodies and incendiary rhythmic passages, bolstered by a top-notch rhythm section, Atlas Maior writes original melodies exploring maqamat (Middle Eastern modal system) and harmonic progressions found in American jazz. The group composes with a wide variety of rhythms and incorporates traditional instruments including the Indian tablas, Middle Eastern dumbek, & Peruvian cajón.

Blending elements of jazz, funk, world beats, and classical music, Found Memories takes listeners on a musical journey that is both familiar and unexpected. Frontwoman Carolyn Trowbridge’s diverse musical background brings an eclectic sound to her original compositions. With the main voice being vibraphone, the textures, harmonic colors, and grooves create a broad spectrum of emotions ranging from excitement and joy to peace and solitude. Found Memories features Carolyn Trowbridge on vibraphone, Bryan Sunderman on acoustic guitar, Mario Castellanos on bass, and percussionist/drummer Nick Tozzo.
